Titania - A Personification of the Titanic
In memory of the Titanic tragedy and the lost commercial expedition of 2023
Like many others, I’ve been fascinated by the Titanic tale since I was little. More recently, a few years ago, that fascination became a prayer intention whenever I remember the Holy Souls in Purgatory. In 2023, when the commercial expedition to the Titanic was lost, I was moved by both tragedies and memorialized their memories in just a small way, the little bit that I could do outside of prayer, in a personification of the Titanic. Due to the nature of this, I’ve decided to share higher-resolution images than I normally would.
The red hair is not intended to be a nod to the Titanic movie, by the way, it was the only color that worked when it was sheered (no pun intended)! Titania’s dress is inspired by the Edwardian evening gowns of the period, with the thought and memory of the disaster wrapt in each detail.
The blue satin of her gown naturally mirrors the dark sea that night, the icy overskirt the glacier. Not visible here is the lace-like embroidery reminiscent of the White Star Line insignia
The gold collar reminds of the staircase which she is descending, while the spilling ruby brooch recall the needless loss of life.
The blackened panels wrapping around the dress from the back are studded with rivets like the ship’s hull, with hints of verdigris and rust.
Her choker is likewise marked with rivets and waves; a sapphire ribbon holds her hair, pinned with the White Star.
The lower panel of the skirt is decorated by beads like shards of ice; the two shades of blue are separated by the waterline, lit by the White Star, simultaneously invoking the red SOS flare. The hem of the skirt is marked as the ocean bed, with beads like littering debris.
The train has memories of the ship’s sinking embroidered, along with scrap-like beads and crystals, with the trim mimicking ocean foam.
