Our second edition of (Modest) Mermay was prompted by Meaghan McIsaac’s illustration of a mer-mother protecting her children from a shark attack (see here). I love seeing this twist on the classic mermaid character!
So far I’ve only posted fully-colored artworks, but this week’s sketch is the exception, as I wanted to post it before the end of Mermay. This is just sketched on paper, as I do with most of my drawings before utilizing Krita for the coloring process, so the shading is minimal here. My favorite element is likely the jellyfish sleeves!
Mother and daughter spend a few minutes playing, awaiting the return of the father from a busy day in the royal city, Adara, visible in the distance from beyond the sitting room’s sliding latticed doorways.
The mother is Lidar, Hebrew for “my mother-of-pearl,” but the spelling is also ironically identical to LIDAR, the laser imaging used to map the sea-floor in 3-D. Adva is the small wave, or ripple, gentle but not afraid to make a well-timed splash!
