My first Mermay project! Naia (Basque for “Seafoam”) is one of my forays into redesigning mermaids!
When I was little, my most frequent wish was to be a mermaid, and I’m still fond of them, albeit with upgraded fashion. I enjoy imagining that their clothing would be spun from seaweed, or even seashells, like byssus.
While I always imagined Naia garbed in deeper green shades, the color choices were also influenced by Marina, a humanoid mermaid from the 1960’s supermarionation show, Stingray. (Marina’s costume is going to be recreated over on
!)I originally sketched Naia, then nameless, in 2021.

Beautiful. And now I have the closing song of “Stingray” playing in my head. ;) Nicely done. Thank you for sharing.
